The songs I chose all had different meanings, but all the songs contributed to the afterlife of slavery. The playlist starts off with Life of OJ by Jay-z, and this song stood out to me cause the song really points out the negative stereotypes of African Americans in the United States. The songs also try to put all African Americans in a certain box by saying, “House Nigga or Field Nigga.” Afterlife of slavery the enslaver tries to put Africans in a box for so long and label the enslaved That now current African Americans are viewed as weird and different if they are not acting a certain way. Black Male by Christon Gray talks about the struggles of being a Black Male. It talks about Police brutality and a black man being falsely accused of a crime and sentenced to jail. The song says that the Black Male is being Blackmailed by American Society. Off the Zoinkys by JID talks about the drug problem African Americans have and how American society pushes pharmaceuticals to African Americans. DNA by Kendrick Talks about what is means to be an African American. How the black man is ambivalent with himself the Lyrics, "I GOT POWER, PAIN, POISON AND JOY INSIDE MY DNA.” The Heart Part 5 by Kendrick Talks about the generational and long systematic trauma passed from African to African American families over the years. Alright by Kendrick Lamar talked about the struggles and the disadvantages of being an African American, but he comforts us by saying its going to be all right. What is going on by Marvin Gaye talks about the Black family and how separated it is. Land of the free by Joey Bada$$ talks about the political aspect of the disadvantages of being African American and how American society is against African Americans. Runnin’ Away by Blood Orange, Ian Isiah and Jason Arce talk about the fact African Americans cannot keep running away from the problems and will have to face the hardship of being black. Keep Ya Head Up by Tupac talks about the high teen birth rates, abusive relationships, and poor poverty line in the African American Community. For My people by Joey Bada$$ talks about how Black people are seen as a threat because we are black and actually want the American Dream. Immortal by Jcole talks about the disadvantages of staying in a poor black community. Neighbors by Jcole talk about his white neighbors falsely accusing him and thinking he is selling weed, and that is why Jcole is living in a nice house. The police tore down his place to search for weed and nothing was found. Jcole does not blame the police for doing their job however, he does blame the neighbors.
