Lil Baby: “The Bigger Picture”
This song represents black gothic by expressing how black people are in distress from police brutality. Lil Baby made the song shortly after George Floyd's death, bringing attention to the oppression that has been occurring for 100+ years. Lil Baby says, “We aint taking no more, let us go from them chains. I see blue lights, I get scared and start running.” He also says, “They been killing us for no reason, being going on for too long to get even.” That statement gave a sense of fear and death to black people.
50 Cent: “Big Rich Town”
This song represents black gothic by alluding to the oppression of black people living in big cities and making financial obligations met. 50 Cent says, “They say this is a big rich town, and I just come from the poorest part, Legal or illegal I gotta make it.” This song also presents a supernatural feeling from inexplicable events. 50 Cent says, “Homie, I grew up in hell, a block away from Heaven.” The statement alludes to him living in a crime area where you can be killed any day.
Dababy: “Rockstar” BLM version
The song represents black gothic by alluding to the oppression of black people dealing with police in America. DaBaby says, “As a juvenile, the police pulled their guns like they were scared of me. And we’re used to how crackers treat us, now that’s the scary thing.” This exemplified how cops are quick to draw down on a person because they are black. He also expresses how black people are fed up, which causes them to burn cop cars in America.
J Cole: “Neighbors”
This song represents black gothic by alluding to the oppression of black people being stereotyped as drug dealers because they live in the same neighborhood as white people. He mentions how he can’t sleep at night, wondering if the cops will come to his house. J Cole says, “Black in a white man territory, Cops bust in with the army guns, No evidence of the harm we done.” That means white neighbors called the police on him to investigate his house for drugs and they did not find anything.
Sam Cooke: “A Change Is Gonna Come”
This song represents black gothic by alluding to the oppression of black people having a hard time during slavery and racism in America. Sam Cooke says, “It’s been too hard living, but I am afraid to die. A Change will come, oh yes it will.” That lyric alludes to the struggle of black people feeling deteriorated from the world. The song was made during the roughest times of racism.
Kendrick Lamar: “Alright”
This song represents black gothic by alluding to the oppression of black people by stating the struggles of everyday life and interactions with the police. Kendrick says, “N**** we hate the po-po, wanna kill us dead in the street fashion-show.” He is alluding to white police officers abusing their power and focusing on killing black people. He also says, “N****, we gon be alright.” That short statement is powerful because it gives black people a sense of hope that one day things will change for the good.
21 Savage: “Nothin New”
This song represents black gothic by alluding to the oppression of black people being used to killing by officers in America. 21 says, “Loading’ up the chopper, he gon show ‘em black lives matter. Another n**** made the news, nothin new.” That statement shows how his friend wants to retaliate against officers but he will be killed during the act. Also, he is fed up by mentioning how there is a repeating cycle of police brutality.
Rapsody: “Power”
This song represents black gothic by alluding to the oppression of black people dealing with stereotypes and police brutality. Rapsody mentions how they avoided the trap of being a drug dealer and decided to rap instead. Rapsody also says, “Badges make police feel powerful in the hood. Guns make him feel powerful, but they don’t do anything good.” That statement is powerful because it provides insight on how black people can have all the guns in the world, but it will not stop them from being killed by white police officers.
NWA: F*** the Police
This song represents black gothic by alluding to the oppression of black people dealing with police brutality and racism. Ice Cube says, “F the police, coming straight from the underground, a young n**** got it bad cause I’m brown. And not the other color, so the police think.” This statement implies that black people receive brutality for being of a different skin color than white. It also shows the frustration black people deal with and how they felt towards police back then.
YG: “FTP”
This song represents black gothic by alluding to the oppression of black people dealing with police brutality. YG says, “Murder after murder after all these years. Buy a strap, bust back after all these tears. Momma cryin’ how they gonna heal?” This statement implies that black people are frustrated by the constant killings of our black people in America. He also states that shooting back at the officers will give some sense of power. Also, black mothers have to deal with their children being killed any day in America.
